| STEINBERGER VERY EARLY 1982 L-2 H/LESS

- CONDITION: Very Good.
- ALL GRAPHITE.
This is the forth and earliest (almost prototype) Steinberger
L-2 Bass that we have offered for sale. It is serial number 159
and was made in the Sullivan Street, Brooklyn factory in March
1982 (bit of trivia, ser no# 430 is owned by Sting). The history
with this bass is fascinating. I bought it from the original owner
in the States who used to work in the Steinberger factory. He
told me that this bass was hand picked for Bill Wyman of the Rolling
Stones, but at the last minute the order was cancelled and he
bought it himself. It has been well used but equally well looked
after. Logo has wore off, as with most of these early basses.
The frets are in very good condition. There are small scratches
here and there and a couple of very small chips. The pivot-plate
strap button has worn a groove in the back, above the locking
depression. There are slight string marks in the EMG pickup housing.
It is missing it's plug in leg rest, it has a non-original padded
gig bag. The only slight issues with this bass is that it is missing
one pick-up screw (slight mod holds the pick-up in place) and
one middle face plate screw, neither of these things affect the
playability of this bass in any way. All in all, the bass is in
very good shape. The electronics are also fine. This bass sounds
and plays fantastic. The sustain and tone of the L-2 basses are
claimed to be more desirable due partly in fact of the "knife-edge"
type bridge saddles in contrast to the roller-type saddles used
on the later XL-2 basses. Evidently, they only made up to around
1,300 of these L-2 types in variety of types, but this is the
standard type 4 string model. Other differences are that the access
screws are on the face vs. the back side, a plain bolt-down string
adapter on the nut in lieu of the later adapter on the XL-2's.
Neck and phenolic fret board in very good condition. One of the
best basses ever made. A future collectors classic.
