This is a '59 Les Paul Sunburst Reissue from Gibson's Custom,
Art, Historic division. Following in Gibson's tradition of reissuing
faithful reproductions of classic guitars, this 1996 model was
(and I think still is) the closest possible in specification to
the original 1959 model. The body is made from solid Honduras
mahogany, just like the originals. Mahogany from Honduras is no
longer allowed to be used in guitar production - this was one
of the last to use it. The headstock is finished in a holly wood
veneer with the 'Les Paul' logo silk screened on top. The neck
joint tenon extends to the front pickup cavity and all internal
routing has been laser matched from original '59 instruments.
The binding around the cutaway is vintage accurate. The angle
of the neck to the body is greater than on later Les Pauls, making
it much more comfortable to play. The headstock angle is also
greater, helping give more tone and sustain. The Gibson Classic
'57 humbuckers are the closest pickups Gibson have ever made to
the fabled PAF's (they even have 'Patent Applied For' stickers
on the baseplate). The highly figured maple top is jaw droppingly
beautiful, finished in light cherryburst.
This is still a loud guitar even when played unplugged, but plugged
into an amp it just comes alive. Think of all your favourite classic
Les Paul players - Eric Clapton, Paul Kossoff, Peter Green, Jimmy
Page, Slash, Gary Moore... all these sounds are right there with
this guitar. It is without a doubt one of the best sounding Les
Paul I've ever played.
This is a guitar to be played, not just looked at in a glass case.
It is clearly in 'used' condition, but has never ever been abused.
These days Gibson's Custom Shop charge huge amounts of money for
new guitars which have been artificially aged by Tom Murphy. I've
seen several of them and they look pretty good, though I still
think this guitar looks better. It's been aged properly - by playing
it! The nickel parts are lightly tarnished and the nitro-cellulose
finish is sinking into the wood grain - exactly as it should.
This is a wonderful guitar.
